HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) is a set of "markup" symbols or tags inserted in a file intended for display on a World Wide Web browser. The markup tells the Web browser how to display a Web page's words and images for the user. HTML is the standard language that World Wide Web documents conform to so that users can read or review them over the Internet on a variety of computer platforms. To find out more about HTML go visit the W3C organization Web site.

CREATING LINKS: ABSOLUTE, RELATIVE and TARGETS

Links allow you to specify graphics or text that allow someone to click on them to go to another web page or to load a file.

Click on the icon of the chain link in the menu bar or go to the Insert menu and then select Link.

The text you enter under Link source will be the highlighted text that is displayed on the screen. You will type the address that
you are linking to in the Link to section. Hint: If you are linking to someone else's page, type the full address (i.e.
http://www.rutgers.edu ). However, if you are linking to another page of yours in the same directory, simply type that
page's file name (i.e. index.html ). You can also make existing text AND/OR graphics links. Simply highlight them with the
mouse and then use one of the methods just described.

CREATING A LINK TO AN E-MAIL ADDRESS:
This works virtually the same as creating a normal text link that was explained above. In the line prompting you for the address
of the link, type in the phrase mailto: followed by your complete e-mail address. For example, mine would be
mailto:nobody@rci.rutgers.edu

CREATING LINKS TO POINTS WITHIN A WEB PAGE:
To do this you must first insert targets. Select where you want a link to refer to, click on the image of an arrow pointing to a
target, and give a name to that target (for example, my target for this section is named links). To make a link, follow the same
method as described above. In the Link to section all of your targets are listed. Simply select the one you want to link to and
click OK. "Target"
