Introduction

Users must open a valid OIT account for any of the central computer systems they want to use. These accounts are available for research or class use, administrative data access, and electronic communication (e-mail, Netnews, World Wide Web publishing, etc.). An account is valid only for the system on which it was opened, e.g., opening an account on one of the Faculty/Staff systems does not automatically open an account on the Administrative system.

Student Accounts

All matriculated students (undergraduate and graduate) are entitled to make an account on the Unix-based Instructional Computing Initiative (ICI) systems: clam.rutgers.edu for Camden students, eden.rutgers.edu for New Brunswick students, and pegasus.rutgers.edu for Newark students. (See Creating Your Account.)

Faculty/Staff Accounts

All faculty and staff who are listed in the Rutgers University Online Directory may make an account on the Unix-based Research Computing Initiative (RCI) systems: andromeda.rutgers.edu for Newark, crab.rutgers.edu for Camden, and rci.rutgers.edu for New Brunswick. (See Creating Your Account.)

Administrative Accounts

Accounts are also available for approved access to administrative data on Rutadmin, the University's administrative mainframe. Access to administrative data is limited, and must be authorized by the appropriate data custodian. Applications for Rutadmin accounts are handled by Administrative Computing Services in the Administrative Services Building (ASB), Room 101, 65 Davidson Road, Busch Campus, help@acs.rutgers.edu, (732) 445-3016. The application form is also available online.

Guest Accounts

On the RCI Systems

Accounts on the RCI systems are reserved for Rutgers faculty and staff. Guest accounts are available for individuals who are conducting University business and are directly associated with the University, but are not officially on the University's payroll. A guest account can be requested by a full-time Rutgers faculty or staff member, who will be considered the University sponsor and expected to maintain contact with the guest. The sponsor must complete a guest account application form for the initial request. The signature of the sponsor's Dean, Director, or Department Chair on these forms is required to authorize the appropriateness of the University guest account and the use of University resources for the guest's particular activity. Guest accounts expire on September 30 every year. It is the responsibility of the guest account holder to renew the account every year by submitting the renewal form before the deadline.

RCI guest account application/renewal forms are available online and from the relevant campus office. Please submit completed forms to your campus office as follows:

On the ICI Systems

Accounts on the ICI systems (clam.rutgers.edu, eden.rutgers.edu, pegasus.rutgers.edu) are reserved for Rutgers students. Guest accounts are available for faculty members with RCI accounts who need to be on an ICI system for instructional purposes. An online form is available for faculty members to apply for a guest account on Eden (http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/ic/icforms/edenguest.html). Faculty members who need help to obtain ICI system guest accounts should contact their Campus Computing Services office (see contact information above).

Guest accounts are also available for students enrolled in certain joint programs between Rutgers and another institution but not registered through the Rutgers Registrar. Students eligible for ICI guest accounts should contact the supervisor of their local Campus Computing Center (see Campus Computing Center Locations) or download and fill out the following form: http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/newdocs/for00301/for00301.pdf.

RCI Departmental Accounts

Departmental accounts are available for departments, groups, or organizations at Rutgers that want to conduct business from a central location rather than from one user's account. The account's username reflects the group rather than an individual user. A departmental account has one "owner"--the person who is responsible for the account. The owner may designate any number of additional users. Although these accounts often represent University departments, it is also possible to get a departmental account for projects within a department, or for University-related units or organizations other than official University departments.

A Dean, Director, Department Chair, or other responsible administrator must submit the request for a departmental account. In cases where the account is to be used for units or organizations outside official departments, the person in charge of the unit or project may submit the request, but a Dean, Director, or Department Chair will be asked to endorse it so OIT can verify it is appropriate to use University resources for this activity.

To request a departmental account, please follow the procedure for your campus as follows:

Camden

Submit a departmental account request form to the Accounts Office, Camden Computing Services, Business and Science Building, Room 121, Tel.: (856) 225-6289, Fax: (856) 225-6436. The form is available from the office.

New Brunswick

A departmental account request form is available online and can be submitted online. The request must include a username for the account, plus two (2) alternative names for use in the event the first choice is unavailable (see Choosing a Username You Can Live With for details). You also need to name the owner of the account, who can then add more users if necessary. More information about departmental accounts in New Brunswick is available online.

Newark

Newark Computing Services provides a Newark Departmental Account Form in both paper format and online. The completed form should be submitted to:

Choosing a Username You Can Live With

As part of the account creation process, you will be asked to choose a unique username.  Your username, once chosen, will stay with you as long as you are at Rutgers.  So be sure to choose wisely.  If you have a UNIX account on another Rutgers system, or if you had a UNIX account on a Rutgers system in the past, your old username is still on file and may be assigned to you automatically.  There are rules for username selection.  They are as follows:

  • A username must start with a lowercase letter.

  • The length of a username is between 3 and 8 characters.

  • It can consist of lowercase letters and numbers.

  • Unless it is your IID, your username cannot consist of a series of letters followed by a series of numbers. For example, neither abced3 nor xy56 is a valid username if your IID is dr56.
The creation process will give you  some examples of acceptable usernames, including your IID.  Typically, you can use your last name, your IID, or a combination of your initials and last name to form a username.  If the username you select is already in use, the system will ask you to make another selection.

Please choose your username carefully.  This name will be part of your electronic mail address you use for correspondence.  In almost all cases, you will not be allowed to change your username at a later date simply because it is unprofessional or embarrassing.

Choosing a Secure Password You Can Remember

After your username has been accepted by the system, you will be asked to provide a password. There are rules governing password selection.  It is important to construct a password that is easy to remember and adheres to the following rules.

  • Your password must be at least 6 but no more than 8 characters.
  • Your password must contain a minimum of 3 character classes. The characters on the keyboard are grouped into categories known as classes. They are as follows:

  •              Lowercase letters (a-z)
                 Uppercase letters (A-Z)
                 Numerals (0-9)
                 Special characters (e.g. $ * )

  • The password cannot contain any 4 consecutive characters from your name or IID (i.e. your initials).
Creating a password that contains a minimum of 3 character classes means that you must include one character from at least 3 of the different categories. For example, XYZ+1399 would be valid because it includes characters from the uppercase, special character, and numeral character classes. Another example is Xyz1399 which has upper and lower case letters and numbers.

Note:  For your own security, do not use either of the above passwords.
