Instructional Computing support is offered to both
faculty and staff by the Office of Information Technology. Here is a list of
university wide resources available to enhance your teaching and your students'
learning.
Access
On all campuses, OIT operates various computing labs containing
Macintosh and Windows 2000 microcomputers and Unix systems (Xterminals or
Suns). These labs are open most hours during the week so that individuals
can access instructional software & materials and communicate with the
academic community. All labs have printers which students use to get copies
of on-line materials offered by instructors and to finalize assignments
for submission. Color printing is available at some of the labs. For more
information visit
http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/ccf/main.
Students and Instructors need accounts to use the micros in the OIT labs and
to access the main system services (such as email). These accounts are
self-created by following an on-line procedure. Guest accounts for visiting
faculty, students and others needing access to our various services can be
made on request. An automated account generation process for faculty and staff
is online at
http://www.rci.rutgers.edu/rats/rats.cgi.
Teaching Labs
Rutgers provides teaching labs called Instructional Microlabs (IML's)
to its faculty. For information on the IML's on the New Brunswick Campuses
please visit
http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/ccf/main/iml/imlbasics.html.
Digital Media Lab
Faculty who wish to develop more sophisticated
multimedia applications for classroom use may also find our well-equipped
Digital Media Lab useful. You can contact the DML by calling (732) 445-3129
or visit
http://dml.rutgers.edu.
Enhanced Classroom Support
For multimedia presentations of your courseware,
Rutgers University has Enhanced Classrooms (formerly called Smart Classrooms)
available to instructors. An identical basic equipment package is housed
in the enchanced classroom cabinets -- vcr with a real time counter, combined
laser disc and audio cd player, audio cassette player, slide projector and
connections for a laptop PC or Macintosh computer. There are also voice and
datajacks to enable hookup to the Internet via modem or Ethernet. Teaching
faculty must attend an orientation session conducted by the Teaching Excellence Center in order to use the enhanced classrooms. Contact University
Scheduling Office (x5-2572) to schedule one of these rooms. For additional
information visit
http://teachX.rutgers.edu/ecs/.
New Brunswick Computing Services Educational Series
New Brunswick Computing Services offers computer
training classes for University faculty, staff, and students. A listing of the
classes offered can be found on the Internet at http://edseries.rutgers.edu/, where an online class registration form is available.
WebCT
WebCT is a tool that facilitates the creation of WWW
based educational environments with little technical knowledge needed. It can
be used to create entire on-line courses, or to make supplementary materials
available through the Web. WebCT also provides a wide variety of tools and
features that can be added to a course, such as a bulletin board system,
on-line chat, student progress tracking, group project organization, grade
maintenance and distribution, auto-marked quizzes, and more. If you want to set
up a WebCT course, please fill out this form on the Internet at
https://webct.rutgers.edu/course-setup.html
Mailing Lists and Newsgroups
You may want an electronic way to communicate with
your students beyond simple email. A Mailing List permits you to address
an entire group of pre-designated individuals by specifying only one address to
your electronic mail software--a convenience for contacting groups with whom
you correspond frequently and also for sharing information among people with
common interests. If the size of the list will exceed 50 people, then a Newsgroup
would most likely be a better means for the delivery of information. To set up
a mailing list, the prospective list owner should send electronic mail to help@nbcs.rutgers.edu.
To request a newsgroup, send e-mail to news_support@email.rutgers.edu. For more information on how to submit the request, visit
http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/newdocs/unx01001/unx01001.php3.
OIT/NBCS Help Desk
The
OIT/NBCS Help Desk is
the front door to New Brunswick Computing Services for Rutgers University.
It provides first-level user support to faculty, staff and students.
Dedicated consultants working at the Center consist of full-time staff
and students. The office is located at Room 005, Hill Center, Busch Campus,
New Brunswick. Users can call for assistance while the Help Desk is open

the OIT central systems (also known as 'EDEN' & 'RCI'), inquiries on
dial-up communications, networking, electronic mail, Unix, Windows, and Mac.
In addition to printed documentation, a wealth of on-line resources is
accessible from
http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/helpdesk.
Teaching Excellence Center, TEC

offers services in faculty development, evaluation, assessment, and support for
projects using instructional technologies. The New Brunswick Teaching
Excellence Center web page can be accessed through
