Introduction

This document explains how to use the "Internet Setup" Assistant to set up your Macintosh for dialup access to the Internet via Rutgers Computing Services. The proper setup for your Macintosh depends upon what version of the Macintosh Operating System, or Mac OS, you are using. To find the version number, start your Mac, click on the screen background, known as the Desktop, to make sure you are in "Finder", then pull down the Apple Menu, located in the top left corner of the screen, to the first menu item: "About this Computer" or "About this Macintosh". That should open a window of information. Read the item labeled "version:".

  • If the version is less than 7.6.1 then you should upgrade or consider using "serial", text only, communication with the old Mac Kermit program or Mac ComCenter

  • If the version is between 7.6.1 and 8.0, then you should install the old "Mac RUNfree" program which installs FreePPP and configures the appropriate control panels.

  • If the version is between 8.1 and 9.1 the you can use the Internet Setup Assistant.

  • If the version is Mac OS X, then you can make the settings in System Preferences with the "Internet" item.

Where is it?

For Mac OS 8.1 through 9.0 the Internet Setup Assistant is located in the "Internet" folder on the hard drive.
For OS 9.1 it's in "Applications">"Utilities">"Assistants".

Establishing a Dialup Connection

If you are using the Mac OS 8.1 through 9.1, you can use the communication software that comes with the operating system.

Pull down the "apple" menu to "Control Panels" and start either "Remote Access" or "PPP". In that control panel, review the phone number and username. Make sure that your modem is connected and turned on. Then click on the "Connect" button. You should hear the modem dial the number, then the various tones as a connection is established. Finally the PPP program sends your username and password to the terminal server and if it's correct, you have a connection established.

Now open the "Internet" folder. In that folder open the Netscape folder and double click on Netscape Navigator. It takes half a minute or less to load. That's it, you're on the Internet!
