Macintosh/Power Macintosh Internet Software

The Mac RUNfree CD is a collection of Internet access software for Mac Users at Rutgers New Brunswick. It is organized in folders. The following index is a folder by folder description of the contents of the Mac RUNfree CD.

Note that when the installation instructions say "copy" it means to use the mouse to click on the program or folder and drag it to your hard disk. If the instructions don't say where to put the program or folder on your hard drive, then it's up to you. A typical location could be a folder named "Applications" or "Utilities".

  1. Anti-Virus

    • Virex Version 6.1 Anti-Virus Software: Click on Install to Scan your Mac for viruses and to install Virex on your Mac. See the Read-Me file in this folder for more information.

    • Virex Administrator: For use by managers of several Macintoshes to install Virex over the network.

  2. Documentation

All documents are written in "Simple Text", the standard Mac editor. Simply double click on a document and it will be loaded and displayed.

    • MacRUNfreeCD.README: A copy of this index.

    • Internet Setup Assistant, or ISA, instructions for OIT: If you have Mac OS 8.1 or higher, you can use the ISA to configure your Mac to connect to the Internet via OIT services.

    • Mac RUNfree Doc: This document contains instructions on how to use the Mac RUNfree Internet connection kit to connect to the Internet via OIT services. It's easier than using the ISA but you need to obtain the kit whereas the ISA comes built-in with system 8.1 or newer. The Mac RUNfree kit is included on the Mac RUNfree CD.

  3. Mac RUNfree

This is the Internet Connection Kit for OIT New Brunswick Users, version 4.2. This will automatically install Internet software, including Telnet, Fetch and Stuffit, and configure your Mac for a dialup connection. The software gets installed in a folder named "Internet Applications". The complete documentation for Mac RUNfree is available in the "Documentation" folder.

    • Mac RUNfree Eden 4.2: For use by Eden account holders. Open this folder and double click on the program "Install Mac RUNfree Eden 4.2"

    • Mac RUNfree RCI 4.2: For use by RCI account holders. Open this folder and double click on the program "Install Mac RUNfree RCI 4.2"

  4. Telnet & FTP

Telnet and Fetch are included with the Mac RUNfree Installer kit but they are available here if you want to install them separately.

    • Fetch 3.0.3 Installer: Fetch is the file transfer program, or FTP, that OIT recommends for the Macintosh. With Fetch you can upload or download files to any FTP site on the Internet. Since this file is an installer, you double click on it and when the dialog box appears you select the destination, a folder on your hard disk.

    • Telnet-2.7b3-fat Folder: Telnet is used to open an interactive connection to another remote host computer such as the Unix system for RCI or Eden. Through that connection you can log onto the remote computer if you have an account and password there. This version is "fat" which means it includes both PowerPC Mac and the old 68k Mac machine instuction code. To install, copy this folder to your hard disk and copy the "NCSA Telent Preferences" file to the "Preferences" folder in your "System Folder".

    • tn3270 2.5b5 Installer: The TN3270 program is a type of Telnet used to connect to IBM "mainframe" systems such as the OIT Administrative Services or Rutadmin system with the IMS data screens. To install, double click on this installer and it will ask you to select a destination on your hard disk.

  5. Utilities

    • Aladdin Expander 5.5: To install double click on this file. Expander is used to expand/decompress many different types of compressed files as well as for decoding Mac binhex files. After installing, there should be a "Stuffit Expander" icon on your desktop. Drag and drop the file to be decoded and expanded onto the desktop icon. Expander handles many different file types, including stuffit (.sit) and binhex (.hqx).

    • QuickTime version 4.1.2: Quicktime is Apple Computer's industry standard software for viewing or creating video and picture graphics. To install, double click on the file QuickTime Installer. This will create a folder on your hard drive named QuickTime Folder.

    • Adobe Acrobat Reader: Used for the display and print "PDF" files that were created by Adobe Acrobat. To install, double click on the file "Reader+Search 4.05 Installer". This will create a folder on your hard drive named "Adobe Acrobat 4.0".

    • RealPlayer version 7: Used to display RealPlayer Video and Audio files. To install, double click on the file "RealPlayer Installer". This will create a folder on your hard disk as follows: Hard Disk: Internet: Internet Applications: Real Player Files

    • ResEdit version 2.1.3: Used to modify the resource fork of Mac files. To install, drag this folder to your hard drive. (advanced/special use only)

  6. Web Browsers

Used to access and display World Wide Web locations or "pages" on the Internet. These browsers all include functionality for IMAP (and the older POP3) e-mail sending and reading, as well as netnews reading and posting. Communicator includes web page editing.

    • Communicator 4.73 Complete: You should probably install this one provided you have a fairly new Mac. You need at least 32 Megabytes of RAM total (13 Meg free), have at least 50 megabytes of hard disk space available and your MacOS (the operating system) should be at least version 7.6.1. To install, open this folder and double click on "start here".

    • Communicator 4.7 w/Calendar: The same as the above version except that it also includes an electronic calendar. It requires about four megabytes more Ram and Disk space.

    • Communicator 4.08 for 68k: This is for older Macs (non-Power PC). To install, open this folder and double click on "start here".

    • Communicator 4.08 Pro: This is an older version but it includes the "IBM Host on Demand" feature for connecting to the Rutgers "Rutadmin" administrative mainframe system via Telnet 3270. It requires a PowerPC Macintosh.

    • Microsoft Internet IE4.5 & OE5: This is the Microsoft product. It includes the Outlook Express e-mail software that handles either POP or IMAP mail service. To install, open this folder and click and drag the files and folders inside to your hard drive.
