Subscribing to Rutgers Mailman Lists

There are two ways to subscribe to a Rutgers Mailman list: using the Mailman Web Page or by e-mail. You only need to follow one set of instructions to subscribe and unsubscribe to any list.

Using the Mailman Web Page

  1. 1. Navigate to the list information page for the list you want to join. The index of public mailing lists at Rutgers is available at https://email.rutgers.edu/mailman/listinfo/.

Note:If the list to which you wish to subscribe is not shown, it may be a private list. In the address field for the Web browser, add the list name to https://email.rutgers.edu/mailman/listinfo/list_name replacing list_name with the actual name of the list you want. Whether a public or a private list, the Information Page contains the forms to submit both subscription and unsubscription requests.

2. Once located, click on the name of the list to open the Information Page. Note that lists may or may not be open to the general public; parameters concerning each list are included in the description. When in doubt, contact the list owner by sending an e-mail message to list_name-owner@email.rutgers.edu, where list_name is the name of the list .

3. Complete the fields as follows:

a. Enter the e-mail address to which mail from the list is to be sent in the Your email address field. It need not be a Rutgers e-mail address.

b. Enter your real name in the Your name field if you wish.

c. Also optional is whether a password to use the list is sent to the entered e-mail address automatically by the system, or you can Pick a password. . If you do not choose a password one will be automatically generated for you.

Warning: if you decide to choose your own password, the Office of Information Technology strongly encourages you to NOT use the password normally associated with your Rutgers NetID since the Mailman password is mailed to you in "plain text," i.e., unencrypted and thus subject to possible viewing by others.

d. Enter Yes if you would like to receive the Mailman list mail in a digest (i.e. collected) form or No if you prefer to receive individual messages as they are sent by the list (note that the list owner or moderator may have already set this option and it may not be available).

4. Click the Subscribe button and the subscription request will be submitted:

5. A new page will open confirming your subscription request was received:

6. You may receive an e-mail message asking you to confirm your subscription request. This is a security feature to prevent people from subscribing you to a list by faking your e-mail address (how that message will appear may vary, depending upon which e-mail program used):

7. Reply through your e-mail program to confirm you wish to join the list. If the list is a private list, i.e. the list owner will need to approve the subscription, approval may take a little time. However, once a decision is made you will receive a subscription confirmation message. Save the message to a folder where you may locate it later since it contains information about using the list, including how to manage options and how leave the list:

To unsubscribe from a list or edit any available membership options:

1. Open a Web browser to the same subscription page for the list and scroll down to the last section on the page. Enter the e-mail address which was used to initially subscribe to the list and click the Unsubscribe or Edit options button:

2. The Membership configuration screen will open. Scoll down to the Unsubscribing to section and verify you wish to leave the list by clicking the box next to Yes, I really want to unsubscribe, followed by clicking the Unsubscribe button:

3. A confirmation message will appear:

4. Depending upon the list's policies, you may need to confirm your request to unsubscribe from the list. If confirmation is required, you will receive an automated message from Mailman. either visiting the Web link in the message or replying to the message will confirm the request. Shortly afterward should shortly receive an e-mail advisory confirming your unsubscription from the list. Just like when subscribing to a list, the confirmation is a security feature to prevent people from maliciously faking your e-mail address to remove you from a list:

5. You will receive an e-mail advisory that your request to leave the list is complete:

.

Subscribing Using E-mail

1. Open the e-mail program which sends mail from the address you want to subscribe to the list. In this example, Mozilla Thunderbird is used but any e-mail program will work.

2. Send an e-mail message to the list subscription address in the form subject and body of the message will be ignored, so it doesn't matter what you put there.

3. Depending upon the list policies, you may receive an e-mail message requiring You should shortly receive an e-mail confirmation with any further instructions (how that message will appear may vary, depending upon which e-mail program used):

4. Reply through your e-mail program to confirm you wish to join the list by just clicking the Reply button; no other action is needed. If the list is a private list, i.e. the list owner will need to approve the subscription, approval may take a little time. However, once a decision is made you will receive a subscription confirmation message. Save the message to a folder where you may locate it later since it contains information about using the list, including how to manage options and how leave the list:

To unsubscribe from a list by e-mail open an e-mail program which sends mail from the address you want to subscribe. Again, for this example, Mozilla Thunderbird is used.

1. Send a message to the list unsubscribe address in the form subject and body of the message will be ignored:

2. You should shortly receive an e-mail advisory confirming your unsubscription from the list, or depending upon the list policies, asking you to confirm you made the request:

3. Follow any instructions in the message to complete leaving the list, such as reply to an e-mail message. This is a security feature to prevent people from maliciously unsubscribing you from a list by faking your e-mail address. The instructions can vary from list to list.

4. You will receive an e-mail advisory that your request to leave the list is complete:
