In establishing criteria for e-mail software at Rutgers, the University Office of Information Technology (OIT) uses two special security measures to help protect the University community using the Rutgers Network: Transport Layer Security (TLS) and SMTP Authentication, often called SMTP "Auth" for short.
TLS encrypts and protects messages while in transit between computers and prevents electronic "eavesdropping." It does not protect information while it resides on a machine, just while it is in transit. SMTP Auth verifies that any mail the server is instructed to deliver actually originates from a valid Rutgers user account. Most newer versions of e-mail
software utilize SMTP Auth, which can be configured in e-mail settings
by sending an e-mail username and encrypted password before
transmitting outgoing messages. It also helps protect e-mail from viruses and hackers who are looking to steal
people's private information. Laptop users who travel frequently will find SMTP Auth especially
helpful. Once configured, the e-mail software will not have to be
reconfigured at each new location or connection method.
OIT also strongly recommends Netscape be used with the
IMAP software protocol for sending and receiving e-mail. IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) permits a "client" e-mail program like Netscape to
retrieve and manipulate messages from a desktop computer at home, a
work station at the office, or a laptop computer while
traveling without the need to transfer messages or files back and
forth between those computers as required by the older and less efficient POP (post Office Protocol) program.
If you are using use an older version of Netscape, you would
benefit from a newer version of the product for use with the Rutgers Network. If you have upgraded Netscape from a previous version (for example, 6.x) your profiles should have been
preserved.
To create a Netscape e-mail account with your profile for the Rutgers Network:
- Start Netscape. Select Window from the menu and
then select Mail & Newsgroups.

- The Local Folders window will appear. Click on Create a new account

- In the Account Wizard box, make sure the Email account radio button is selected and click Next:

- Enter your real name and Rutgers NetID and click the Next button:

- Click the IMAP radio button, then enter system.rutgers.edu where system is the machine upon which your Rutgers account is located (e.g. RCI) as the Incoming Server.
- Enter your Rutgers NetID (all lower-case letters) as the User Name then click on the Next button:

- Enter your Rutgers e-mail address (all lower-case letters) as the Account Name then click on the Next button:

- The Congratulations! screen should appear with a summary of your account information. Check your typing as an error will result in Netscape not handling your e-mail properly. Click the Back button to return to the particular window needed to make any corrections.
Your summary should look similar to this:

The summary should read:
- Your account name (e,g, jsmith@rci.rutgers.edu)
- Your account name (i.e. your Rutgers NetID)
- Your e-mail address (e.g. jmith@rci.rutgers.edu)
- Incoming server name as rci.rutgers.edu (or the machine upon which your account is located, such as andromeda, pegasus, eden, clam, or crab).
- Incoming server type as IMAP (or the machine upon which your account is located, such as andromeda, pegasus, eden, clam, or crab).
- Incoming server name as rci.rutgers.edu (or the machine upon which your account is located, such as andromeda, pegasus, eden, clam, or crab).
- Outgoing server type as smtp.rutgers.edu
- Click Finish to exit the wizard. Close all components of Netscape (the browser, e-mail program, etc.) and restart it to make certain the new settings are saved. However, Netscape still needs SMTP Authentication set to send e-mail securely on the Rutgers Network.
Configuring Netscape Mail for SMTP Authentication:
- Start Netscape. Select Window from the menu and then select Mail & Newsgroups.

- The mail window for your Rutgers e-mail account will appear. Click on View settings for this account.

- When the Account Settings window opens, click on Server Settings
- Make sure the box next to Use Secure connection (SSL) is checked.
- Click on Outgoing Server:

When the Outgoing (SMTP) Server Settings dialog box opens, enter these items:
- Set the Server name as smtp.rutgers.edu. The Port number should be set to 25.
- Check the Use name and password box, then enter your Rutgers NetID in the User name and password text field.
- The Use secure connection option should be set to TLS:

- Click OK
Netscape Mail is ready to use securely on the Rutgers Network.
Note: Authorized users of departmental (on RCI) or organizational (on Eden)
accounts should log into those e-mail accounts the same as before. However,
when prompted for a user name and password to send e-mail messages, users will
need to enter their personal RCI or Eden NetIDs and the case-sensitive password
associated with each account. That is, they should
not use the departmental or organizational account name (with its
associated password) when
sending e-mail.
