Create Your Account
All students listed in the Rutgers Online Directory are entitled to create an account on the Instructional Computing Initiative (ICI) system, commonly called "Eden, to access the Rutgers Network and the Internet. When creating an account students will create a Rutgers NetID (username).
NetID creation is available at the following web page:
http://www.eden.rutgers.edu/rats/rats.cgi
More information on creating an account is available at
http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/newdocs/newuser002/emakeacct.html.
Two other useful documents related to account issues are:
"Creating Accounts on OIT Systems" and
"Account Problems and Issues: Creation, Use, and Closing." Both documents are available online.
Using Your Eden Account in the Residence Halls
If you will be living in the student dormitories and have your own computer, you can connect to the campus network to access your Eden account and other Rutgers computing resources. Direct network connections are available in most of the New Brunswick dormitories through the
The Office of Information Technology Residential Networking Project (RESNET). In dorm buildings not yet wired to the network, students use modems. For direct network connections, your computer must have a network interface card. Contact the RESNET HELPDESK at 732-445-HELP to determine whether your dorm building requires a network card or modem to connect. If your computer does not include this hardware, you can obtain it from the
Rutgers University Computer Store or another vendor. The RESNET Staff members assigned to your dormitory building can help get your computer hooked up to the Rutgers network.
Using Your Eden Account at Home
Once your account is set up, you can use it from Rutgers terminals or by connecting from home with a computer equipped with a modem. The two basic options for accessing your account from a home computer are (a) dialing into the Rutgers system by configuring and running a PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) connection with dialup networking, and (b) using another internet service provider and connecting to your Eden account with the Telnet program. The option you select will probably depend on whether direct dialing to a Rutgers telephone number is a local or long-distance call for you.
Detailed instructions for configuring and running PPP with dial-up networking for both the Windows (98, ME, 2000, and XP) and Macintosh (system 9 or higher) platforms are available online (see Dialing into Your Account from Home references at the end of this document).
Electronic Mail
Your Eden account includes both Web-based access to Rutgers mail via Webmail at SSH Telnet program and then type
pine at the system prompt (the system prompt will appear as er#%, e.g., er3%, er5%, etc.). This will give you an opening screen menu containing command options and help. If you prefer to use a graphical mail program, you can configure the mail client programs that come with the major web browsers (Netscape Communicator or Mozilla/Mozilla Thunderbird, or Microsoft Internet Explorer) to handle e-mail from your Eden account.
Online documentation is available for using Pine and for configuring Netscape Mail, Thunderbird Mail, Outlook, or Outlook Express to handle your mail (see the Electronic Mail references below).
Publishing on the World Wide Web
You can publish web pages through your personal account by setting up a special subdirectory called public_html and moving your web pages to it. The pages will then be accessible to the public. The web address for your home page will consist of the ICI system domain name followed by your personal account directory name. For example, if your username is jones, your homepage web address would be
http://www.eden.rutgers.edu/~jones/
Rutgers web support also includes an online archive of templates and tools, including instructional documents dealing with basic and advanced topics, a collection of Rutgers graphics, sample pages, and other materials. More information about web support at Rutgers is available online (see the World Wide Web at the end of this document).
Getting Help
Help is available at the New Brunswick campus computing centers: Busch (Allison Road Classroom Building); College Avenue (Records Hall Building); Cook/Douglass (Lenore F. Loree Building); and Livingston (Tillett Hall). The
New Brunswick Campus Computing Facilities web page (see URL below) includes details about contact hours and locations. The OIT NBCS CS Help Desk, Room 013 Hill Center, Busch Campus, can also help with your account problems and questions. Contact the Help Desk by telephone at (732) 445-HELP (732-445-4357) or by electronical mail at help@eden.rutgers.edu.
Visit the Help Desk's web site at http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/helpdesk/hdnew/ for announcements, updates, and useful documentation.
