Requesting a New RAMS Mailing List
What Type of List Do I Need?
Rutgers provides access to three types of
mailing lists: general mailing lists, official mailing lists, and
class mailing lists:
- General mailing lists are static lists of member e-mail addresses
that are provided and maintained by the owner of the list. General
mailing lists are handled through the Mailman software. Mailman mailing lists can be requested at http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/newdocs/unx01001/unx01001.php3.
- Official mailing lists are primarily for official University announcements. The owner of the list
provides a demographic category, and the list of member e-mail addresses are provided by
the Rutgers databases. Official mailing lists can be requested by contacting the Help Desk with the information noted below.
- Class mailing lists are for
announcements and class discussions outside of normal class meeting hours and are created through the class list creator. The list creator requires logging in with a valid Rutgers NetID and password. In addition, access to class sections is governed by a user's roster privileges, which may be obtained by contacting your Dean/Director/Department Chair or their designated assistant responsible for assigning privileges.
How Do I Create a Class Mailing List?
To create a new list, log on to the List Creator at https://rams.rutgers.edu/rams/class_create.cgi.
Enter your Rutgers NetID to define the new list membership. Note
that you first must have been granted roster privileges are by a
dean/director/department chair or their designated assistants. More
information about creating class lists is available in the class
list creator manual at https://rams.rutgers.edu/class_list_doc.html
Use the pull-down menu to select the year and the term and click the Next button. The list creator will walk you through the list including list options such as whether the list is to be an open or closed list along with other options.
How Do I Request an Official University Mailing List?
Contact the Computing Help Desk on your campus. When you do, please make sure you have the following information ready:
- For whom the the list is being created (i.e. your department)
- What purpose the list is to serve (e.g. "to contact Camden law
school students")
- The specific target demographic group for the list (e.g. "all
students on the Newark campus who are not US residents")
- Who will own or moderate the list (include the Rutgers NetID and e-mail address)
- Who will be the alternate owner/moderator of the list
- When specifying the demographic parameters (e.g. "all French
majors") make sure the school code and curriculum code are included
- A proposed list name. The Office of Information Technology requires a prefix be used unless messages sent to the list are to be distributed University-wide:
- CM_listname@rams.rutgers.edu (Camden)
- NB_listname@rams.rutgers.edu (New Brunswick)
- NK_listname@rams.rutgers.edu (Newark)
- Whether archived postings are to be publicly available.
| In submitting requests for official mailing lists, the Office of Information Technology strongly encourages requesters to provide as specific demographic information as possible. Also, due to legal requirements, the University's ability to exhaustively collect and the target audience's willingness to disclose certain demographic information, some requests may be denied. It should also be noted that some requests for lists may be denied in favor of the announcement(s) being broadcast through an existing official university list considered reasonably appropriate for the nature of the announcement. All Rutgers mailing lists are bound by the University Acceptable Use Policy which can be found online at http://oit.rutgers.edu/acceptable-use.html. |
General or Ad Hoc Mailing Lists
General or ad hoc mailing lists are currently being handled
through Mailman. Submit requests at http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/newdocs/unx01001/unx01001.php3
