Note: The instructions in this document also apply to using Samba with Dreamweaver MX 2004. However, the SFTP utility in that product will work on RCI and on Eden. Please visit http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/newdocs/dreamweaver/dw_mx_ssl.php3 for instructions to publish Web pages through MX 2004.
Windows computer users on the Rutgers Network can access and manage files on their RCI or Eden accounts utilizing remote drive mapping with software called Samba. Files can be copied, moved, edited and deleted as if the files were located on the computer upon which someone is working. Both individuals and departmental account owners may find Samba a useful collaborating tool for maintaining Web sites, developing lengthy documents or extensive spreadsheets, or for maintaining files in their home accounts.
However, to get the most from this document, at least an intermediate knowledge of Windows computers and Macromedia's Dreamweaver web developer software is recommended. More information about using Samba on the Rutgers Network is available at http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/newdocs/samba/index.php. Dreamweaver workshops are available through the Teaching Excellence Center, online at http://teachx.rutgers.edu/.
Connecting to an RCI or Eden Account with Remote Drive Mapping
Note: The instructions below assume a Samba password was already obtained through the appropriate Webtools page at http://www.rci.rutgers.edu/webtools/ or http://www.eden.rutgers.edu/webtools/. Otherwise, a Samba password is available by clicking on the Samba Access link on the RCI or Eden Webtools pages. The Samba password, separate from the RCI or Eden password, will be sent to the account owner's e-mail address. The same holds true for departmental accounts and student organization accounts, except the Samba password will be sent to the group account's e-mail address.
- Access the Samba path and the www share--i.e. access to the public_html directory in which Web files are stored--by clicking through the Start menu to My Computer, then select Map Network Drive:

The Map Network Drive dialog box will open.
- Complete the fields in the dialog box with the following:
- In the Drive field, use the pull-down menu to select a drive letter or leave the default setting.
- In the Folder field enter \\rci.rutgers.edu\www (faculty/staff)or \\eden.rutgers.edu\www (students). The pull-down menu or the Browse button can be used to select directories that were mapped in previous Samba sessions.
- Click on Connect using a different user name

- Enter the Rutgers NetID (username) in all lower-case letters, and the Samba password exactly as it appeared in the confirmation e-mail message. Note: the Samba password can be cut and pasted from the e-mail message to the password field.

- Click the Finish button. A window displaying the public_html directory should open:

- Files can now be transferred, shared or edited.
- To disconnect from the account, right-click the icon in the My Computer window and select Disconnect. Close the other windows.
Saving Dreamweaver 3.0/4.0 files to Samba
Note: Dreamweaver works best when Web sites are first "defined" when they are created. Defining sites allows for accurate hyperlinking between pages and synchorizing pages between the local machine and the location where the files are published every time the site is updated. The instructions below assume the site is already defined and individual pages are ready for publishing on the Web.
- When using Dreamweaver to save files to a Samba drive letter, use the selection from the File menu to save the file to the Samba drive letter. Make sure the public_html folder is the target for the files so visitors to the Web site will be able to view the pages:

- If the file is replacing an older file with the same name, a dialog box should ask for confirmation to replace the old file.
- Test the file transfer by viewing the Web pages in a browser by pressing F12 in Dreamweaver or by typing in the URL, such as http://www.rci.rutgers.edu/~your_NetID/your_file_title.html (faculty/staff_ or http://www.eden.rutgers.edu/~your_NetID/your_file_title.html (students).
- Close the Samba connection and Dreamweaver.
