Publishing a Webpage using Adobe GoLive and Remote Drive Mapping With Samba

In the past File Transfer Protocol (FTP) was the way which many Webpage Development programs such as Adobe GoLive used to Publish websites to the Internet. However, FTP was insecure; that is, files could be intercepted and confidential information could be obtained by unauthorized people. Thus to protect usernames and passwords on the Rutgers Central Server Systems RCI and Eden, OIT enabled only SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol) which means those who use web page development programs such as Adobe GoLive will need another method to publish their web pages. OIT'ss answer is Remote Drive Mapping With Samba.

In order to use remote drive mapping with Samba, Samba access to your account must first be set up. Instructions for Samba access are available at:

http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/newdocs/samba/windowsxp

Note: If this is your first time using Samba it is strongly recommended that you review:

http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/newdocs/samba

before you continue.

Publishing web pages to RCI or Eden requires a connection to the www share of the respective account. After that pages can be published using the Save As feature of GoLive.

Publishing Webpages using Samba

  1. Once you have mounted your home directory and are ready to publish a web file in GoLive go to File on the toolbar and then choose Save As...

  2. A dialog box called Save As will appear. Click on My Computer on the left toolbar of this dialog box. All drives, including ones connected to with Samba, will appear. Select the drive set as the mounted directory on a OIT server (e.g."homes on 'rci.rutgers.edu (rci.rutgers.edu)'(X:)".

  3. Enter a name for the webpage file in the File name: text area.
  4. In the Save as type: drop down box select Hyper Text(.html).

  5. Click on Save to upload the file to the RCI server.
  6. The webpage that was uploaded will now be able to be viewed on the Internet.

Common Errors and Solutions

The following are errors that may be experienced when using remote drive mapping with Samba. This list will be updated as needed.
  1. The Network path \\rci.rutgers.edu\www (or \\eden.rutgers.edu\www) could not be found

That error could mean one of three things:

    1. Your network connection may be unavailable. Try visiting several other web pages both at Rutgers and off-campus.
    2. If you are using a computer off-campus, you may need to connect to the Rutgers Network with the VPN software before trying to map a drive using Samba. Information about VPN can be found at http://oit.rutgers.edu/vpn
    3. The special Samba directories may not yet exist on the account. For example, there may not be a public_html directory on an account so the www share won't be able to connect. A public_html directory can be created by connecting to an RCI or Eden account with SSH and entering the command mkdir public_html. A directory called RCI_drive or EDEN_drive is automatically created for the homes share when remote drive mapping is enabled, and should not be deleted. If that happens, use SSH and re-create the directory using the command mkdir RCI_drive or mkdir EDEN_drive.
