Outlook 2000/2003

  • Make sure the a bar near the left labeled Folder List is available. If not, pull down the View menu from the menu bar, and click on Folder List.
  • In the Folder List, right click on the main entry for RCI, most likely rci.rutgers.edu.
  • Select IMAP folders from the pop-up menu.
  • In the next dialog box that appears, click on the Query button to display a list of all of the folders.
  • Select the folders to be viewed. A number of folders can be viewed at once by holding down the Control (Ctrl) key while clicking on the folder name. Note: Folder names will all start with Inbox followed by the actual folder name.
  • Click on the Subscribe button. Note: Outlook can be set to display all folders, whether they are subscribed or not. Rather than clicking the Subscribe button, remove the check from When displaying the hierarchy in Outlook, show only subscribed folders
  • After clicking OK,the folder list may need to be refreshed by clicking the right mouse button on the main entry for RCI in Folder List and choosing Update Folder List.
  • Click on OK. The folder list should now be rebuilt. If only Inbox is shown with a + next to it, click on the + to display the entire folder list.


Outlook Express

  • In the left-hand pane, find the main entry for RCI. It will probably be called either rci.rutgers.edu or email.rci.rutgers.edu. In case both are present, make sure rci.rutgers.edu is selected by clicking on it once with the left mouse button. A list of mailboxes on RCI should appear in the right pane.
  • In the right pane, or at the top of the window on the toolbar, there will be an item or a button called IMAP Folders, respectively. Click on the item in the pane or the toolbar button. A window listing the folders should appear.
  • Click on the button Reset List on the right side of the box. That retrieves a list of all possible mail folders from RCI.
  • With the list in the dialog box, click on all the folders to be viewed within Outlook Express. Multiple folders can be selected by holding down the control key (Ctrl) while clicking on each folder.
  • Once the desired folders are selected, click on the Show button, then the OK button. Note: If only Inbox with a + next to it is displayed, click on the + to view the entire list.

Netscape 7.x/Mozilla 1.7.x

Note: There may be subtle differences between Netscape and Mozilla software.

  • Make sure the Messenger program part of Netscape is started.
  • There should a bar on the left-hand side listing various servers and mailboxes. Click once the left mouse button to select the main entry for RCI. It will probably be called either rci.rutgers.edu or email.rci.rutgers.edu. In case both are present, make sure rci.rutgers.edu is selected by clicking on it once with the left mouse button. A list of mailboxes on RCI should appear in the right pane.
  • Click on the File menu and select Subscribe.
  • In the Subscribe to Folders and Newsgroups window, there should be a list of RCI-based files and folders with check boxes next to them. If all that is visible is Inbox with a + next to it, click on the + to see the whole list. Netscape 7 will display a small triangle icon instead of a + symbol.
  • Click the Refresh List button.
  • Click in the colomn labeled Subscribe to the right of the mailbox names to make check marks appear next to all the folders to be seen. Click OK.
  • The folders should appear in the left-hand window. Click to open them. Open them as you would any other folder. If all that is visible is Inbox with a + next to it, click on the + to see the whole list. Netscape will display a small triangle icon instead of a + symbol.

Mozilla Thunderbird
  • In Thunderbird, click File on the pull-down menu than select Subscribe. A dialog box displaying the Inbox folder and the account (a pull-down will be available if multiple e-mail accounts are configured in Thunderbird) will open. Click the + (Windows) or the small triangle (Macintosh) to expand the folder list.
  • Click the check boxes to select the folders to which you wish to subscribe.
  • Click the Subscribe button.
  • Click OK to accept the subscriptions.

The subscribed folders should appear in the left pane of the program.

Macintosh OS X Mail
The Macintosh Mail application, if already configured to use IMAP on the Rutgers Network, should automatically display all mailboxes. It will not matter whether the folders are subscribed or not.


Entourage for Macintosh OS X
  • On the left-hand side bar showing systems names and folders, select the main entry for RCI. It will probably be called rci.rutgers.edu or email.rci.rutgers.edu
  • The folders list should appear; the triangle next to INBOX may need to be clicked once to show the whole list
  • Click Update List at the top
  • Click on each mailbox to subscribe to it, and then select Subscribe at the top. Groups of mailboxes can be selected by clicking the first and last entry with the Shift key held down
  • The appropriate mailboxes should now be visible in the left bar; the triangle next to INBOX may need to be clicked once to show the whole list


Rutgers Webmail
  • Log into Rutgers Webmail at http://webmail.rutgers.edu.
  • Click on Folders on the menu at the top of the screen, and on the Folders screen scroll down to Unsubscribe/Subscribe section.

    Note: If the AUTO-DELETED-SPAM folder appears in the left-hand column it is already a subscribed folder and you need not take any more action.

  • Otherwise, click to highlight AUTO-DELETED-SPAM then click the Subscribe button:



  • At the top of the page a heading will read Subscribed successfully and the AUTO-DELETED-SPAM folder should now appear in the list of subscribed folders:

  • Click the refresh folder list at the top of the page, and the AUTO-DELETED-SPAM FOLDER will appear in the list of subscribed folders in the left-hand pane:



  • Subscription to the AUTO-DELETED-SPAM folder is done.
