The term SSH stands for Secure Shell, and is a secure replacement for telnet. Like telnet an SSH Client can be used to connect to a Central Server System like Eden or RCI. The main difference between telnet and SSH is that with SSH all of the communication between the client and the server is encrypted. This gives users a layer of security that is not available with a telnet application. There are many different SSH Clients available for users at Rutgers University. They can be found at http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/ssh. On that web page users will find links to many different types of SSH clients for many different Operating Systems. This document will go over how to use the SSH Corp. SSH Client to connect to RCI or Eden.
- Go to Start--> Programs --> SSH Secure Shell and then click on the icon that reads Secure Shell Client.

- Once the program is opened click on Quick Connect

- This will bring up a dialog box asking for some information about the connection that is trying to be established. In this area the following information should be entered.
- Host Name: This area should contain the hostname of the system that you are trying to connect to. For Eden users eden.rutgers.edu should be entered. For rci users rci.rutgers.edu should be entered.
- Username: In this area the NetID for the account which you are trying to connect to should be entered.
- Port Number: The port number that is entered should be 22.
- Authentication Method: In this section use the pull-down menu to select either Profile Setting or Password is selected.
Next click on the connect button to make the connection.

- If this is the first time you are using SSH on the computer to connect to the remote host, or if the remote system has been rebooted you may get the following dialog box:

You should click on yes to continue.
- Next the following dialog box will be displayed:

You should click on OK to continue.
- When prompted for a password type in your RCI or Eden NetID password and click OK

- You should now be connected to the system.
