The term SSH stands for Secure SHell, and is a secure replacement for Telnet. Like Telnet an SSH Client can be used to connect to a Central Server System like Eden or RCI. The main difference between telnet and SSH is that with SSH all of the communication between the client and the server is encrypted, giving users a layer of security that is not available with a telnet application. There are many different SSH Clients available for users at Rutgers University. They can be found at http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/ssh. This document will cover how to use the PuTTY SSH Client to connect to RCI or Eden.

  2. This will bring up the PuTTY Configuration screen

  3. In the Host Name or IP Address area please enter the hostname of the system you which to connect to. (For RCI users rci.rutgers.edu should be used as the hostname, and Eden users should use eden.rutgers.edu)

  6. If this is the first time you are using SSH on the computer to connect to the remote host, or if the remote system has been rebooted you may get the following message:

The server's host key is not cached in the registry. You have no guarantee that the server is the computer you think it is. The server's key fingerprint is: ssh-rsa 1024 7b:e5:6f:a7:f4:f9:81:62:5c:e3:1f:bf:8b:57:6c:5a If you trust this host, hit Yes to add the key to PuTTY's cache and carry on connecting. If you want to carry on connecting just once, without adding the key to the cache, hit No. If you do not trust this host, hit Cancel to abandon the connection.
At this prompt you should answer yes

  7. A prompt that says login as: will appear. At this prompt you should enter your NetID username for the system you are trying to connect to
