Using The SSH Corp. SSH Client To Securely Transfer Files To And From RCI And Eden

The term SFTP stands for Secure File Transfer Protocol, and is a secure
replacement for FTP. Like FTP an SFTP Client can be used to connect
to a Central Server System like Eden or RCI, and transfer files to and from the local computer. The main difference between
FTP and SFTP is that with SFTP all of the communication between the
client and the server is encrypted, giving users a layer of security
that is not available with an FTP application.
The main SFTP client that is available at the University is built into the SSH Corp. SSH Client. The SSH Corp. SSH Client is available for users at Rutgers University to download from:
http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/ssh.
Using the following instructions users can use SSH to securely transfer files to and from RCI and Eden.
- Double Click on the Secure File Transfer Clienticon located under the SSH Secure Shell folder in the Programs, menu.

- This will bring up the SFTP Secure File Transfer screen

- Next click on the Quick Connect icon located on the top toolbar of the screen

- This will bring up a dialog box asking for some information about the connection that is trying to be established. In this area the following information should be entered.
- Host Name: This area should contain the hostname of the system that you are trying to connect to. For Eden users eden.rutgers.edu should be entered. For rci users rci.rutgers.edu should be entered.
- Username: In this area the NetID for the account which you are trying to connect to should be entered.
- Port Number: The port number that is entered should be 22.
- Authentication Method: In this section password should be selected.
Next click on the connect button to make the connection.

- If this is the first time you are using SSH on the computer to connect to th
e remote host, or if the remote system has been rebooted you may get the followi
ng dialog box:

You should click on yes to continue.
- Next the following dialog box will be displayed:

You should click on OK to continue.
- When prompted for a password please enter the NetID password for the account you are trying to connect to and click OK
.

- Once this is done you will see all the folders and directories located in the account on the remote system. Notice that there are two sides to the SSH Secure Shell Transfer Client

- Files that are on the side that has the Local Name column are located on the local computer. .

- Files that are on the side that has the Remote Name column are on the remote system.

How To Transfer Files From The Remote System To The Local Computer-
- To transfer files from a remote system to the local computer you should first select the appropriate destination folder from the local computer side of the screen.

- Next find the location of the files to be transfered on the remote system side of the screen.

- Select the files to be transfered by holding down the Control Key and selecting them with the mouse.

- Next Right Click on the files and select download.

- This will download the files to the local computer
How To Transfer Files From The Local Computer To The Remote System-
- To transfer files to the remote system from the local computer you should first select the appropriate destination folder on the remote computer side of the screen.

- Next find the location of the files to be transfered on the local system side of the screen.

- Select the files to be transfered by holding down the Control Key and selecting them with the mouse.

- Next Right Click on the files and select upload.

- This will download the files to the remote computer
