Note: If you are uncertain whether or not your modem is installed, see Addendum I: Adding A Modem to Windows 2000 Pro.

  1. Go to the taskbar and start up the Control Panel.

    You'll see the following:

  2. Double Click on the Phone and Modem... You will see the "Phone And Modem Options" window. You are ready to specify dialing rules.

  3. From Dialing Rules, under "Locations:" highlight the location from which you will be dialing (i.e. New Location). Click on Edit... If there is no entry under "Locations:" click on New... instead. You should see the "Edit Location" window:

  4. Under "General" from the Edit Location window, do the following:

    • If you click on New from the previous screen, under Location name: enter a name (e.g. New Location or Rutgers).

    • Under Area code: enter the area code from which you will be dialing. For example, if your number is 908-xxx-xxxx, you should type 908 in the Area Code field.
      * Starting from December 1, 2001, it is required to include the area code (732) to dial into New Brunswick dial-up numbers for users who are calling within the 732 area code.

    • If you have call waiting and you don't want the tone to disrupt your modem connection, you can disable the call waiting. Check the option that says "To disable call waiting, dial:". To the right of this, click on the down arrow key and select *70 (for Verizon calling region).

Your screen now looks like the following if you disable the call waiting:

If you don't have call waiting, your screen should look like the following:

  5. Click on "Area Code Rules" from Edit Location window. Your screen looks like the following:

  6. If you never define any area code rule, there should be nothing in the box under "area code rules:" Click on New... to continue. If there is already an entry under "area code rules" and you want to make changes, highlight the entry and click on Edit... You will then see the New Area Code Rule window:

  7. From the New Area Code Rule window, do the following:

    • In the "Area code:" box, enter the area code from which you will be calling.
    • Under Prefixes, "Include all the prefixes within this area code" should be checked in a normal situation. (If you need to use something else, click on "Include only the prefixes in the list below:" and add the prefixes you want to include.)
    • Under Rules, if you are dialing long distance, check "Dial:" to put a 1 there.
    • Under Rules, "Include the area code" must be checked if you live in an area where you are required to use 10 digit dialing to connect to the Rutgers dial-up numbers.

Note: Effective 12/1/01, all calls from the 201, 732, and 973 area codes will require ten digit dialing of the area code plus the regular seven digits. For callers on New Brunswick/Piscataway campuses, this means that calls to other numbers in the 732 area code will require all ten digits. Likewise for the Newark campus, calls to other 973 numbers will require ten digits. Callers to Camden in the 856 area code will need to do likewise.

Your screen now looks like the following:

Note: The Save Password box may be checked if you have a secure machine. If the box is checked, you will not have to enter your password for each connection. If you are using a public accessible machine you should not check this box.

Logging in via PPP to Rutgers can be used ONLY if you have an account on rci, eden, andromeda, clam, crab, and pegasus. If you do not have an account on any of these machines, contact the NBCS Help Desk, 732-445-HELP (4357) on how to set one up.

  20. Click on Dial. The modem will now begin to dial the number and you will begin to see the status of the dialing, connection, and verification of your account.
