III. Logging onto the Rutgers Network

NOTE: Logging in via PPP to Rutgers can be used ONLY if you have an account on RCI, Eden, Andromeda, Clam, Crab, and Pegasus. If you do not have an account on any of these machines, contact the NBCS Help Desk, 732-445-HELP (4357) on how to set one up.

Addendum IV: Area Codes and Call Waiting

We will assume that you have already made your dialup connection icon. If you have not, see page 3, section II) Setting Up Connection Phone Numbers.

If you are calling from a phone that is outside the Rutgers Dialup Numbers, you will need to change the area code. *Users who live within the 732 area code will need to define "area code rules" so that the area code will be included when dialing into New Brunswick dial-up numbers.

  1. Double click on the dialup connection icon, you will see the following screen.

  2. Click on Dial Properties. You'll see the following:

  3. In the field called Area Code, type in the area code you are dialing from. For example, if your number is 908-xxx-xxxx, you should type 908 in the Area Code field.

  4. If you have call waiting and you don't want the tone to disrupt your modem connection, you should do the following to turn it off. In the Verizon calling region, you dial *70 to disable call waiting. To do this in Windows 98, make the following changes in the Dial Properties dialogue box. Check the option that says "To disable call waiting, dial:". To the right of this, click on the down arrow key and select *70. After following steps 3) and 4) your screen should look like the picture below:

  5. To define the area code rules, double click on the Area Code Rules ... button. You will see the following Area Code Rules window. The box before "Always dial the area code (10-digit dialing)" under "When calling within my area code" needs to be checked.

Click on OK to return to the "Dialing Properties" window. Click on the Apply button, and then click on OK. You are back to the "Connect To" window. Click on Connect to make a successful connection to save the new settings you've just defined.
