Dial-up Networking With Windows XP Home and Pro

Note: All pictures in this document are taken from Windows XP Default View. Users who are running XP in the Classic View may see things in a slightly different way
  1. Go to the Start Button and click on the Control Panel icon.

  2. If Windows XP has the menus set to Category View click on Network and Internet Connections.

  3. If Windows XP has the menus set up to use Classic View the Control Panel will look like the next picture and the option that you want to select would be called Network Connections.

  4. If the computer is in the default Category view the the following window will come up. On this window select Network Connections. (If the computer is using the Classic View please skip to step 5).

  5. Once at the Network Connections screen select Create a New Connection from the Network Tasks Area.

  6. When the New Connection Wizard comes up click Next.

  7. Now select Connect to the network at my workplace and click next.

  8. Select Dial-up connection and select Next.

  9. In the Connection Name window type in a name for the connection that is going to be created.

  10. In the Phone Number to Dial Window enter the phone number you would like to dial into.

    Remember that when dialing into the 732 area code even from within the area code you need to include '732.'

  11. After clicking Next, a final step appears giving the option to add a shortcut to the desktop. Click this box if you want to do that or leave it unchecked to not do this. Then click Finish.

  12. Now a box will come up and prompt you for a username or password.

  13. In the area that says username please type in your NetID username

    In the area that says password you need to enter your NetID password. Please leave the box that says Save this username and password unchecked.

  14. Click Dial to Connect

  15. Once connected an icon will appear on the toolbar at the bottom of your screen that looks similar to this:

  16. When you want to disconnect simply right click on this icon and select disconnect.
