RUCS-NB Secure Services Transition

Why is the Transition Important?

Insecure services will be decommissioned at various times during the Summer of 2003 and the Winter of 2004. Approximate dates for when these services will be decommissioned can be found below: NOTE: Insecure E-mail and Telnet Services have already been decommissioned.

Secure replacements for these services are currently available on RCI and Eden. That means THE NECESSARY CHANGES CAN BE MADE NOW ON YOUR COMPUTER.

NOTE: Faculty and staff should check with their departmental computer person before making any changes to the e-mail software or downloading a secure replacement for telnet or FTP.

What Services will be Affected?

  • E-MAIL

In order to continue using a desktop e-mail program in conjunction with your RCI or Eden account, you will have to make a change to your e-mail program. In most cases, you just have to click a certain check box within your e-mail program so it uses a secure connection (SSL).

Detailed instructions can be found http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/secure-services.php?page=email.

  • TELNET

Many of you currently use a telnet program to make interactive connections to RCI or Eden. This includes graphical programs such as TeraTerm on Windows, telnet from a Windows command prompt (e.g. Start, Run, type: telnet rci.rutgers.edu), as well as the telnet command in other command line environments.

You will need to replace these programs with programs that use SSH ("Secure SHell"). Both graphical and command line versions of SSH are available. Many of these clients are available for download from http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/ssh

See http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/secure-services.php?page=telnet for instructions on downloading and setting up SSH for the most common operating systems.

  • FTP (File Transfer Protocol)

If you currently upload or download files through an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program such as WS_FTP in Windows or Fetch on a Macintosh, you will have to begin to use a new secure replacement for FTP such as SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol). SFTP is built into most SSH clients. SSH clients can be downloaded from http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/ssh.

However in some cases you may find a separate SFTP program more convenient. See http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/secure-services.php?page=ftp for a listing of available software for the most common operating systems.

  • Web Page Development

If you use the built in File Transfer Protocol (FTP) program with Dreamweaver, FrontPage, or GoLive! to publish web pages on RCI and Eden, RUCS recommends that you use remote drive mounting with Samba for Windows, or Interarchy for Mac OS X. Information on using Samba to remotely mount directories on RCI and Eden can be found at http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/newdocs/samba. For information on purchasing Interarchy for Mac OS X, please visit their web page at http://www.interarchy.com. Alternatively, you may use FTP over SSL, although this is not officially supported by RUCS.

More information on using remote drive mapping with Samba in conjunction with some commonly used web development tools is available by visiting http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/secure-services.php?page=web_dev.
