RUCS-NB Secure Services Transition

Secure Replacement For Telnet-

Many of you currently use a telnet program to make interactive connections to RCI or Eden. This includes graphical programs such as TeraTerm on Windows, telnet from a Windows command prompt (e.g. Start, Run, type: telnet rci.rutgers.edu), as well as the telnet command in other command line environmen ts.

You will need to replace these programs with programs that use SSH ("Secure SHell"). Both graphical and command line versions of SSH are available. Many of these clients are available for download from http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/ssh

The following documentation on how to use SSH is available:

Using SSH For Windows-
Using SSH For Classic Mac OS (versions 8 and 9)-
Using SSH For Mac OS X-
SSH for Linux and Unix-
The command-line ssh program should be present in many distributions of Linux and Unix. Linux RPM packages and source that can be compiled on other versions of Unix are available at http://www.openssh.org/portable.html

SSH and X-Windows-

SSH also allows users to run UNIX programs which require X-windows (Netscape, Xmaple, SAS. SPSS) remotely on their local PC. The process is called SSH X11 forwarding and requires an SSH client and an X-Windows Emulator. The following documentation is available for assistance with doing this:
