What is Documentation?

A collection of written specifications and instructions for supported OIT software.

On-line documentation and handouts in the labs are intended to help you get started using the equipment and software on your own.

Software manuals are available to look up the answers to more advanced questions or special functions.

Why do I need documentation?

The computers on Rutgers' campuses are configured to meet a variety of needs.
  1. Documentation familiarizes you with the public computer equipment on each campus.
  2. Documentation assists you in using specific Rutgers software such as makeacct.
  3. Documentation helps get you started in using computer software or assists you in locating an answer to a complex question.
  4. Online documentation allows you to look for an answer to your question from a remote location or during off hours.
All Campuses have a variety of documentation in various formats.

All public labs on all campuses have documentation pertaining to hardware/software available in that lab in racks.

The Information Center on the New Brunswick campus has printed documentation.

All OIT time sharing systems running the Unix operating system have man pages.

Where can I get Documentation?

Go to a public computing lab on any campus or the Information Center on the New Brunswick Campus to pick up paper documentation written by the OIT staff.

Manuals written by software manufacturers are available for in room use on the Camden Campus in the Operations Room (BSB 114), in Newark, in New Brunswick

What does it cost to use documentation?

There is no cost for the use of documentation, however the in room use of a software manual requires that you leave your driver's license or a validated Rutgers ID.

What if the documentation is incorrect?

The documentation could be incorrect due to the fact that it is meant for equipment/software in a different public lab or campus.

Software or equipment may have been upgraded and the documentation wasn't in place due to unexpected problems.

A software manufacturer may have issued an addendum to their manual.

The staff at your Campus Help Desk or in the public student labs can assist you with problems in the documentation.
